Sydney Roosters keeping tabs on Todd Carney for 2010

Todd Carney's playing future has been solved for this season, but the focus has quickly moved to his career beyond 2009 as Sydney Roosters have taken an early lead in the race to secure his services.
The last impediment to Carney's return with the Atherton Roosters was cleared on Friday when Canberra decided against objecting to his comeback in bush football. The Raiders board rubber-stamped his return as long as it was with Atherton.

Carney was sacked by Canberra last year following the latest alcohol-fuelled incident of his controversial career. He was subsequently refused the right to play Super League for Huddersfield by English authorities, eventually accepting an offer from Atherton, which plays in the Cairns competition.

"We have given him a clearance for Atherton only," Canberra chief executive Don Furner said.

"We're still disappointed that he didn't attempt to rehabilitate himself and continue playing at Canberra, but we resolved not to stand in his way."

NRL chief executive David Gallop had stated he had no objection to Carney playing with Atherton. His move to bush football, where he will also work in the hotel run by Atherton president Mick Nasser, is expected to be only a temporary measure.

Carney, 22, is likely to be allowed to return to the NRL next season and clubs are already queuing for his services.

The Roosters are considered the front-runners to secure the his services, although they were forced to deny rumours they had helped support his move to Atherton.

"That's completely untrue," recruitment manager Peter O'Sullivan said.

"I refute that completely."

O'Sullivan confirmed the Roosters remained interested in signing Carney and believe his stint in bush football won't inhibit his ability to make a successful return to the NRL.

"He's got good hand-eye co-ordination," O'Sullivan said.

"Will it affect him? Probably a tad, but he's a talented kid."

While the Roosters are leading the chase for Carney, they are by no means the only club interested. St George Illawarra coach Wayne Bennett has also held talks with Carney while Penrith coach Matthew Elliott is a long-time admirer of the talented half.

Elliott, however, is no certainty to be with the Panthers next season and Carney is unlikely to join Penrith if he is not there.

While Carney's career in 2010 remains in limbo, two other high-profile players are close to finalising long-term deals with their respective clubs.

Tigers half Benji Marshall will agree to a million-dollar extension with the 2005 premiers within days, ending his flirtation with Japanese rugby union.

Marshall's new contract is expected to tie him to the club until the end of 2011 and his manager Martin Tauber has suggested the New Zealand international would like to be a Tigers player for life.

At the same time, Melbourne and Australia full-back Billy Slater is close to announcing a lucrative contract extension with Melbourne Storm.

Slater had a clause in his contract that allowed him to explore his options overseas and in rugby union, but he will instead join Cooper Cronk, Cameron Smith and Greg Inglis in committing his future to last year's grand finalist.

Employing Todd Carney to work in your pub is a bit of a risk isn't it?

 Some people would answer with a straight face "No why ?"

At least he might get pulled into line if he acts like a dick up there. Nothing like drinking in an old fashioned pub with old fashioned blokes to teach you how to behave on the piss. Alot can be said for the drinking habits of a whole generation who have never drank in a proper pub environment.

yeah well over the weekend he played up again on the drink. This move could end his career rather than re establish it.

Tbh I think there's a lot of truth in this.

But there's no hope for Todd Carney. Even after a million 'alcohol related offences' he continues to drink crazily, and then when Canberra say to him 'give up grog for a year or we'll tear up your $400k contract' he says 'tear it up'. Like Dave Gallop said the other day he's a lesson to other players, one of the most talented players in the competition is playing bush footy in Queensland because he is an alcoholic.
