South Sydney stars breath-tested by club at recovery session

By James Phelps |

Breath test...Craig Wing at the South Sydney recovery session at Maroubra.
SOUTHS' record-breaking round-one win over the Roosters was sobered yesterday by the club's hardline drinking policy putting a break on celebrations.

Just a week after Brett Stewart's alcohol-fuelled romp through Manly rocked the NRL, the Rabbitohs' strict anti-alcohol policy was on display for all to see with pin-up boy Craig Wing subjected to a mandatory breath test at the Souths recovery session at Maroubra.

"This is something we have been doing for 15 months," Souths chief executive Shane Richardson said.

"We test at every recovery session after a match and they are breath- tested at least once, maybe twice during the week randomly at a morning session."

South Sydney controversially stood down four players last year for failing a breath test after playing the Broncos in Brisbane.

Those banned for a match included captain David Kidwell, Ben Rogers and Shannon Hegarty.

"Last year we stood four players down because they went over the limit," Richardson said.

"We have a 0.05 limit and the guys who went over last year weren't even over that. The players set a total alcohol ban after the Broncos match and four of them had alcohol in their system the next morning. The guys were about 0.02 but because they were over we stood them down."

With the strict alcohol policy making sure Souths' players did not celebrate excessively after club's record-breaking 52-12 win over the Roosters, Richardson stressed the breath test had nothing to do with Manly's pre-season disgrace.

"It had nothing to do with that," Richardson said.

"Our policy has been around for a long time."

All Souths players, including Wing, blew under the 0.05 limit yesterday.
